Chapter 19
THE DEMON STOMPED AROUND, filling the cafe with the stench of burnt paper and singed hair and sulfur strong enough to mask that stink of rancid oil. This whole cafe would go up in flames.
“Get under the table.” First thing I needed to do was get Larry out of danger.
Larry tried to glare at me without letting the demon out of his sights.
“Get under the table, sir.” Even with this threat to his life, I couldn’t forget Larry was my boss. “We’ll try to get to the door.”
“We need to neutralize the threat.”
How the hell Larry intended to do that, I didn’t know. “We need to survive then call for back up.”
Larry’s curt nod signaled his agreement.
I slid under the table but winced when I hit the floor. The germs on that sticky floor might be more deadly than the demon. My skin quivered from the rush of power pooling inside me.
On hands and knees, using toppled tables as shields, I made it to the counter in one piece. Words sang through my body, the words to annihilate that demon. I had to hold them in but they wanted out. They flowed through me with no escape, snaking up my spine, pressing in my belly and my lungs and my neck. I held my breath, urging them to wait.
Larry’s hands grasped the edge of the table, pulling himself up.
“No,” I yelled. “Stay low.”
Instead of staying down, Larry got his gun out.
I screamed. The idiot. Bullets wouldn’t help.
He fired.
The demon reeled, hit but not going down. He threw back his head and howled.
“Run!” I screamed.
Larry fired again. Always thinking like a cop.
Before the bullet hit, flames burst from the demon, so hot and bright I had to shield my eyes.
“Watch out!”
Too late. Larry rolled on the ground, flames covering his jacket.
Screw hiding my powers. They pressed so hard now I had to double over, and still, the demon stomped on. If Larry’s burns weren’t fatal, the next hit would be.
Larry struggled to his feet but I waved at him to stay down. I didn’t need to. He crumpled to the floor, unable to stand.
If he couldn’t crawl, I sure couldn’t carry him out of here. There was no weapon behind the counter, only salt, but salt wouldn’t take a beast that strong down.
My hands shook. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t hold my powers in much longer. I exhaled.
The words flowed, words that came from some place outside of me. Ancient words beyond my understanding. Now I’d started, I wouldn’t be able to stop until I destroyed the beast.
“Huh?” Larry stared, opened mouthed. No longer on fire, he’d crawled to the cover of one of the tables. I’d get to him once I’d vanquished the demon.
My voice turned to a high-pitched wail. The air around us shimmered.
The demon thrashed around, howling and thudding. Fire burst from him, almost hitting me in the face. The vinyl upholstery on a chair near me went up in flames. My heart hammered almost louder than the chanting.
